How Often Should You Really See the Dentist?
Dr. Amelia Hartley · 14 September 2026
Most of us grew up hearing "see the dentist every six months." It's a reasonable default — but modern dentistry has moved on. Your ideal recall interval depends on your individual risk, not the calendar.
Who needs more frequent visits?
You'll likely benefit from 3–4 month visits if you:
- Have a history of gum disease or periodontitis
- Smoke or vape
- Have diabetes
- Are pregnant (hormonal changes affect gum health)
- Have multiple crowns, implants or a dry mouth
Who can wait longer?
If you're low-risk — no history of decay, healthy gums, good home care — your dentist may stretch recalls to 9–12 months under national guidance.
What a check-up actually covers
A proper examination is much more than "a quick look":
- Oral cancer screening of soft tissues, tongue and neck
- Gum health scoring — catching inflammation before bone loss
- Decay detection, backed by digital X-rays where needed
- Bite and jaw joint assessment
- A written plan with transparent costs if anything needs attention
The cost of waiting
A small filling costs a fraction of a root canal and crown. Most dental problems are painless until they're serious — that's exactly why recalls exist.
Bottom line: ask your dentist what interval your mouth needs, and book the next visit before you leave the chair.
