Teeth Whitening: 6 Myths and the Facts Behind Them
Sophie Maddox · 2 August 2026
Whitening is the most requested cosmetic dental treatment — and the most misunderstood. Let's clear up the biggest myths.
Myth 1: "Whitening ruins your enamel"
Fact: Professional whitening under dental supervision is enamel-safe. The gels open microscopic pores in the enamel to lift stains — they don't strip it. Damage stories almost always involve unregulated products bought online.
Myth 2: "Whitening toothpaste works the same"
Fact: Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains with mild abrasives. They can't change the internal shade of a tooth — only peroxide-based gels can do that.
Myth 3: "Results are permanent"
Fact: Expect 1–3 years depending on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Top-up gels used a night or two every few months keep your shade fresh cheaply.
Myth 4: "Anyone can whiten"
Fact: Whitening doesn't work on crowns, veneers or fillings, and isn't suitable during pregnancy or with untreated decay. That's why a dental assessment comes first.
Myth 5: "It always causes sensitivity"
Fact: Modern gels with desensitisers, plus custom-fitted trays, have dramatically reduced sensitivity. If you're prone to it, we can adjust gel strength and wear time.
Myth 6: "Supermarket kits are the same thing, cheaper"
Fact: In many countries, shop-bought kits are legally limited to a tiny fraction of the peroxide strength a dentist can prescribe. You get what you pay for — and a poor fit can burn gums.
